Cristiano Ronaldo hit with tax fraud allegations
Things had been going so well for Cristiano Ronaldo on and off the pitch, that the tax fraud allegations which sprung up this week are pretty much the only negative for the Portuguese superstar right now.
Ronaldo won La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid in 2016/2017 and looks like a shoo-in for all the individual 2017 awards like the Ballon d’Or.
Off the pitch, Ronaldo is the new face of FIFA 18 and his recently born twins are on their way to Madrid.
Ronaldo comes out fighting
As is standard for a Jorge Mendes client (see Pepe) Cristiano Ronaldo came out fighting regarding tax fraud allegations that emerged from Spanish prosecutors earlier this week.
Spanish prosecutors filed a lawsuit against Cristiano Ronaldo for alleged tax fraud of £13m (€14.7m) between 2011 and 2014.
Ronaldo released a lengthy statement denying tax fraud but admitted towards the end that “the declared amount can be discussed”.
Ronaldo preparing for the Confederations Cup
Despite a statement that stretched to three pages, Ronaldo has been fairly silent in his pronouncements so far.
The Portuguese superstar is currently with the Portugal squad preparing for the Confederations Cup.
Portugal play Mexico in their opening game at the Confederations Cup on Sunday.
“Clear conscience”
When pressed by Spanish reporters in Russia, Ronaldo said: “Clear conscience”.
When pushed further by a journalist with a one-word question: “Innocent?”
Ronaldo responded: “Of course.”
“Sometimes the best answer it’s to be quiet”
On Thursday, Cristiano Ronaldo took to Instagram and added to his personal attempt to play it down.
Ronaldo wrote: “Sometimes the best answer it’s to be quiet”.
With the now familiar picture of Ronaldo shushing at the camera.
With the tax fraud allegations likely to continue for some time, expect more Ronaldo reactions on video and social media.
